Named as one of Mexico’s Magic Towns in 2018, Compostela is our first stop. Founded in 1540, by the Spanish Conquistador, Cristóbal de Oñate, Compostela boasts a rich history and well preserved colonial buildings. Its lush green surroundings provide the perfect environment for coffee production, and this trip wouldn’t be complete without a visit to one of the local, family-run coffee plantations.
From Compostela we head to the archaeological site of Los Toriles, the only archaeological site in Nayarit open to the public. This interesting historical site dates back to approximately 200 years BC and is one of the few sites in Mesoamerica which include circular constructions, similar to those of Guachimontones, Jalisco. From here we head to the Magic Town of Jala, famous for growing the world’s largest corn cobs!
Day two of this tour take is to the crater lake of Santa Maria del Oro, one of Nayarit’s most beautiful spots. Enjoy a relaxing afternoon and evening in a privileged location on the edge of the lake. On day three we take you to the state capital, Tepic, to learn some more about the state’s history and visit an indigenous Huichol (also known as wixárika) community. From Tepic we visit the quaint town of Bellavista, before heading north to the Island of Mexcaltitán, once speculated to have been Aztlán, the mythical homeland of the Aztecs.
We end this trip with a leisurely boat ride through the impressive mangrove system of La Tovara, San Blas; sit back and enjoy the ride as the ecosystem changes from a brackish estuary to fresh-water lagoon, creating the perfect habitat for a diverse array of flora and fauna, including the American Crocodile and several large water-bird species. You will also learn about the impressive Fort of San Blas and its role in the history of the area.
