Fireflies Tour
New for summer 2024 – an entirely magical trip through the states of Tlaxcala and Puebla to see some of Mexico’s hidden treasures, including one of nature’s most beautiful creations, the fireflies, or lightning bugs!
Join us to visit two entirely different environments that provide home to hundreds upon thousands of fireflies. The adults of these magical creatures, a type of beetle, are active during the summer months in several areas of Mexico, including some forested areas of the states of Tlaxcala and Puebla. The first section of this tour takes us to the beautiful pine and oak forests of Nanacamilpa in the state of Tlaxcala, with the breathtaking backdrop of the Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl volcanoes! Here we take you on an evening walk to observe these amazing creatures in their natural habitat.
From Nanacamilpa we head to the hidden gem that is Tlatlauquitepec – a picturesque Magic Town surrounded by forests of pine, oak and fir. The town itself is a treat, but from there we head down through cloud forest to a pristine lake, passing breathtaking waterfalls and come to the real highight of the trip, a boat ride in the dark, surrounded by thousands of fireflies creating a mystical atmosphere with their intermittent flashing, like the lights on a Christmas tree!
Other highlights of this tour include the archaeological site of Tecoaque, inhabited by the Acolhua people (one of the three groups making up the Aztec Empire) from 450 – 1520, now thought to have been the site of capture and sacrifice of hundreds of Spanish conquistadors and their slaves on their way to arrest Hernán Cortes in 1520; a countryside ranch producing the pre-hispanic drink, Pulque; and a city tour of the smallest state capital in Mexico, the city of Tlaxcala!
