San Blas

One of Nayarit’s most special natural areas is La Tovara, San Blas! On this relaxing boat ride you will witness the merging of brackish lagoon water with fresh water from natural springs, and the abrupt change in vegetation where this takes place. We start out by meandering through the mystical mangroves at a slow pace and enjoying the company of the water birds that perch in the trees or fly alongside the boat. As the vegetation begins to change, spectacular views of the nearby mountains open up.

From La Tovara we travel just a few minutes to the city’s fort. Once considered the most important naval station in New Spain, the fort of San Blas was built as a sea-coast defence. It was from here that Spanish priest, Junípero Serra, departed for California and began the creation of the California Missions in 1768.

Another impressive sight on this trip is the ruins of the ‘Templo de Nuestra Señora del Rosario’, also known as ‘Templo La Marinera’, where sailors would go to pray before long, dangerous voyages.

Before our return, we head to the beach for a delicious lunch and some free time, then enjoy a short stroll in the city’s main plaza.
